If
I Have Bad Credit, Just What
Kinds of Credit Cards Can I Get?
You
have options, but your choices will probably mean higher interest
and fees. You may qualify for secured
credit cards. If your credit is severely damaged,
you may not be eligible for a "credit" card at all.
But you do have viable alternatives. Stored
value cards are usually Visa® and MasterCard®
and work just like a conventional card-- you can shop online
and at bricks and mortar stores. Secured credit cards are
cards that require collateral in the form of a savings account.
The amount of the required savings varies with the card, and
starts at $200. The amount of available credit also varies
and is often about equal to the amount in the savings account.
These cards are usually Visa® or MasterCard® and work
everywhere that the unsecured cards do. Secured credit cards
are ideal for those who want to rebuild a bad credit record
or who are just building a credit history. Card providers
may require minimum incomes for eligibility, for example,
Orchard Bank requires minimum $12,000 per year income. Read
more about these cards in credit
cards for bad credit directory.
Stored Value Cards
Stored value cards are an alternative for badly damaged credit
and consumers who may not even qualify for a secured credit
card. Stored value cards may be Visa® and MasterCards®
and are accepted wherever the "credit" versions
are accepted. An attractive option, they don't require a credit
check and don't incur interest. See The
Vaya®
MasterCard® Card.
Merchandise Line of Credit Cards
You can get access to lines of credit of up to $10,000 with
these programs. They aren't "credit" cards. You
may not even be issued a plastic card for some programs. Instead
you may shop for wide selections of merchandise within the
program. Some programs do not require credit checks. Others
may, and may even report account payments to the credit bureau,
so can be a way to rebuild your credit. Program requirements
vary, so view
the directory page under stored value and merchandise lines
of credit. Also carefully read the terms and conditions
of these programs before applying.
So even though you've been turned down for credit in the past,
you have options.
